In the shed working on the keel stub

The glass men that were working on the keel stub first had to grind away anything that was loose to add some glass to the keel stub prior to putting the keel back on. As the bottom of the keel was being ground we ran into another snag. Once all the fairing was taken off the bottom and sides of the stub we found that the glass on the sides of the stub was suspect. The glass was not stuck to the sides of the stub very well and it could be peeled off in chunks with very little effort. I don’t know if this was related to the damage that was caused by the failed effort to attach and remove the keel but it didn’t seem so to me. The fix for this problem was the same fix for everything else …more money! Here are the pictures of the bad glass on the side of the keel stub.

It was suggested and I agreed that the best thing to do was to grind off all the bad glass and put 2 layers of mat over the offending area. A layer of mat would start on the hull on the stbd side of the stub run down the side of the stub under it and up the other side onto the port side of the hull. Another piece somewhat smaller would follow the 1st pc. There was an unused depth sounder transducer that would be removed and filled at this time. ( see arrow)  The pictures of the new glass are the next set of shots.

I really must acknowledge that these glass guys do an excellent job.  The glass guys are part of the reason this yard gets top dollar. The rate here is 77$ per hour and I guess you get what you pay for----usually.
